Designed to grow with a child from newborn size through the preschool stage, this two-mode car seat begins in a rear-facing position and later converts to a forward-facing seat with an integrated five-point harness.

The NextFit iX accommodates children from 5 to 40 lb in rear-facing mode and from 22 to 65 lb in forward-facing mode, with an overall standing-height limit of 49 inches. A removable newborn insert helps provide a more supportive fit for smaller babies weighing between 5 and 11 lb. The seat does not convert into a belt-positioning booster.

Installation is supported by Chicco’s ReclineSure nine-position leveling system, which provides multiple angle options to help the seat fit a wider variety of vehicle seats. Two RideRight bubble-level indicators help parents check the installation angle in both rear-facing and forward-facing modes.

For vehicles equipped with lower anchors, the SuperCinch LATCH tightener is designed to multiply pulling force and help achieve a tight installation with less effort. When the vehicle seat belt is used instead, the LockSure belt-tightening system provides clearly defined belt routing and integrated lock-offs to help position and secure the belt correctly.

As the child grows, the nine-position headrest and no-rethread harness can be adjusted together without manually removing and rethreading the shoulder straps. A one-pull harness tightener helps provide a snug fit, while padded harness components support everyday comfort and make it easier to place the child in and remove the child from the seat.

The removable fabric cover may be hand-washed or machine-washed in cold water on a delicate cycle using mild detergent, then hung to dry. The seat also includes a removable cup holder that may be attached to either side.

Car-seat suitability should be determined by the child’s weight, height, developmental stage and harness fit, rather than age alone.

Rear-Facing Mode

• Recommended stage: Newborns, infants and toddlers who remain within the rear-facing limits
• Harness position: At or below the child’s shoulders
• Newborn insert: Use only in rear-facing mode for children weighing 5–11 lb, approximately 2.2–5 kg

Children should remain rear-facing for as long as they fit within the manufacturer’s rear-facing limits. NHTSA recommends moving to forward-facing only after the child has outgrown the rear-facing height or weight allowance.

Forward-Facing Mode

• Child weight: 22–65 lb, approximately 10–29.4 kg
• Maximum standing height: 49 inches, approximately 124.5 cm
• Harness position: At or above the child’s shoulders
• Minimum manufacturer requirement: The manual permits forward-facing use only when the child is at least one year old and meets all weight, height and harness-fit requirements
• Best-practice transition: Keep the child rear-facing until the rear-facing limit has been reached

Maximum Age

There is no fixed maximum age for this seat. Children grow at different rates, so use must stop when the child reaches any applicable maximum weight, height or harness-fit limit.

The seat is generally intended for use from newborn size through the preschool years. It should not be advertised as suitable from birth to 12 years, because it has no booster mode and ends at a maximum of 65 lb and 49 inches. After outgrowing its forward-facing harness, a child will normally need a suitable belt-positioning booster.

The cup holder can be installed on either side of the seat. The manual permits plastic containers of less than 12 oz and warns against placing glass, metal, sharp or pointed objects in it.

Washable Fabric Cover

The seat fabric may be washed in cold water on a delicate machine cycle with mild detergent and must be hung to dry. The harness itself should only be sponge-cleaned and must not be machine-washed.

Certified for Aircraft Use

The manual states that the child restraint is certified for aircraft use when installed with an aircraft lap belt. Parents should confirm the airline’s car-seat policy before travelling.
